road trip

I have been toying with the idea to blog for awhile now... and to post a comment on my friend Jenn's last post i had to create an account.  So here we are!

My mom and I decided awhile ago to pack my darling son's up and drive from Aurora, Ontario to Brandon, Manitoba.  Even I thought it was crazy more then a few times.  A 6 and a 1 year old in the car for 2 days has to be trouble right?  Turns out I was very wrong!  The boys were angels the entire drive, well most of the drive.  About an hour into the drive we decided to stop and get something to eat, what a nightmare!  They were loud and unmanageable.  DS1 was unable to sit still and took to goading his brother into screaming fits.  DS2 was throwing tantrums left, right and center.  It crossed both our minds to turn around and go home and forget the whole trip.  Then once their bellies were full and mom and I had venti vanilla mistos, we pointed the car north and drove all the way to Thunder Bay!  We made a few stops, in Sudbury to use the facilities and change diapers, and of course top up our coffees.  Then in Dryden to fill our tummies, at the greasiest of greasy spoons!  Then onto Thunder Bay.  We stayed at a B&B called Absolute Serenity, though with 2 small boys there is no such thing this place came awfully close.  We had the whole place to ourselves including the pool and though it was chilly and overcast DS1 was in and out of the pool several times!  Note to self bring DS2 a lifejacket no matter where I go cause I am going to need it!  So all in all, the start of the trip left something to be desired, but in the end the boys showed us that they were up for the challenge.

The next day at around 10 am after a swim, we hit the road and visited Kenora (at this point I felt like we were shooting a Tim Hortons commercial) and straight west to the border.  We stopped like typical crazy people on the side of the highway and took pictures of the HUGE sign welcoming us to Manitoba.  Mom was home!  After arriving in Brandon just after 10 pm we settled in and spread out.

Not for long though, we were back on the road to one of my Aunt's, beautiful cabin on Lake Metigoshe.  What a week that was sun and sand and delicious food and of course lots of beverages!  One day I loaded up the kids and we went into Boissevain and watched some of the Mosquito Baseball Provincials!  DS1 had the time of his life.  The other kids enjoyed getting out of the cabin and into town.  After an entire week of lots of sun and lots of humidity (I guess we brought something from Ontario). The second last day it started to rain, no those weren't American fireworks, it was lightning and lots of it!  So we introduced the tile game chicken errr foot to our family and spent the day competing :)  Then we sadly packed up all our stuff and left the cabin in the rear view mirror.

Once we got back to Brandon I started experiencing severe pain in my right calf, gas pedal, right leg, past history of plenty of vascular problems.  Me in the hospital all night long.  I was diagnosed with DVT's not 1 but 2 lucky me.  I immediately started on 2 drugs, 1 injected and 1 taken orally, my poor pin cushion belly.   My vacation turned into long days on the couch and being waited on hand and foot.  Mom reverted back 30 years, in Brandon alone (basically) with 2 babies to take care of.  I think she thought she had left that behind.

Tonight a new chapter to the story opens up when DH arrives.  Mom will be back on vacation and poor Jordan will be a singe parent, sort of.  Today is the 1st day I didn't take something for pain.  So that is a tick in the win column for me!

thanks for reading,
c
